Lorraine Williams

Treasurer

I was born June 1948 in Rosedale, Mississippi. to Lodine Williams and Robert Gill. I was the first of 13 children. I have 7 Brothers and 5 Sisters. My Grandparents raised me and I spent most of my childhood on the farm, which was a very good life. I moved to Jackson, Ms. I was married in 1971 in Hazlehurst, Ms I have 3 children (2 girls and 1 boy). I moved to Jackson in 1974 where I’ve lived ever since. In 1994 I was introduced to my 2nd husband Arthur William and was married September 1995.

I started attending public school at the age of 6 years old of and at the age of 12 I lost my vision. Wondering how I was going to make it in life my mother enrolled me at the Mississippi School for the blind. It was there that I learned how to adjust to life as a blind individual as well as socializing with others. My best subjects were Math, English and Home Economics. My mother learned about the school from government agencies.

After graduating from the school for the blind I started working at Royal Maid, which is now L.C. Industries and is located in Hazlehurst. I left there in 1974. That same year I began working at Mississippi Industries for the Blind when I moved to Jackson.

learned about the National Federation of the Blind in 1975 but it wasn’t until 1992 that I became a member of the NFB of Mississippi as well as becoming a member of the Jackson Chapter. I’ve been a member until this day and have served as a Chairperson for the fund raising committee, Vice President, and Board Member. I attended my first state convention in March of 1993 which was held in Gulf Port, Ms. My first National Convention she was in Detroit, Michigan in 1994.
